Molecule Polarity and Hybridization
In class today, we discussed a couple of new important topics.
First off, we were able to look over and correct our quizzes on Lewis Structures and molecular geometry. After we finished with the corrections, we continued our notes from friday on molecule polarity. These notes can be seen on Moodle under the Notes section of this chapter.
We also learned a bit about the new subject of Hybridization. Hybridization is just the blending of electron orbitals. These notes should also be under the Notes section along with the molecule polarity ones.
Homework:
-Complete Hybridization Web Assign by tomorrow night 11:59 p.m.!
-Fill out the two worksheets picked up at the beginning of class (should be under the Handouts section)
Also, A Couple of "ChrisTips" on Lewis Structures and Molecular Geometry...
-Make sure you determine the correct amount of valence electrons in the molecule (common mistake)
-Make sure to use your mind to visualize the 3-dimensional figure of the molecule with the help of a Lewis Structure
-Don't ever forget to use BRACKETS around Lewis Structures of IONS :)

Molar Volume Lab and Gas Stoich
Hello My Fellow Classmates!
Homework for the Weekend:
- Finish the Molar Volume Lab for Monday
- Complete Gas Stoich Worksheets (under Unit 5 Handouts)
- Continue studying for the Unit 5 Test on Tuesday by working on the Review Packet!
In class, we discussed a lot about the stoichiometry that is involved with finding molar volumes and gas pressures. We also talked more about STP (Standard Temperature and Pressure). You can find the notes on these topics in the Unit 5 section under Unit 5 notes!
Question of the Day:
Jordan asked a very great question in class on Friday and we had a demonstration that displayed some of it.
"Does a gas ever exert no/0 pressure?"
Mrs. Friedmann explained that all gases will exert some pressure, but never 0. This is because particles in gases are constantly moving and bouncing off of one another as well as surroundings. This is what defines a gas. In order to have 0 pressure, the particles would have to stop moving altogether. If the particles stopped moving, they wouldn't form a gas anymore. A gas at "Absolute 0" wouldn't be a gas, but a solid.
Overall, Study tons and tons for the test!

Hey, Period 5.
Guess what day it is!!!
So back to the best part...Education!
In Class:
Today, as we walked into the classroom, we picked up four worksheets. These worksheets can be found on Moodle in the Unit 2 section under Unit 2 Handouts! Mrs. Friedmann checked the homework from the previous night (the Holy Atom, Batman! worksheet, the mini atomic structure worksheet, and our notes on atomic structure, ions, and isotopes from ChemThink). Something Mrs. Friedmann talked a little about was that it's fine to "walk away" if there's something that just frustrates you on an assignment. After, Mrs. Friedmann had us grab a buddy or two and work on the first worksheet. We worked a little on how to calculate the average atomic mass of isotopes as well.

This video contains 3 isotopes and we only practiced with 2, but it's the same concept!
Notes:
In the beginning of the year, we talked a little about how there are two categories under matter:
Matter
- Mixtures
- Pure Substances
Pure Substances also split into two categories:
Pure Substances
- Elements
- Compounds
In class today, we discussed compounds in more detail. There are two types of compounds:
- Ionic
- Molecular (aka Covalent)
We didn't really talk about molecular compounds today, but we managed to talk about the two kinds of ionic compounds:
- Cation ("CAT"-ion)
- positively charged
- goes first
- usually metal; except NH₄⁺
- Anion ("ANT"-ion)
- negatively charged
- goes second
- always metal; except NH₄⁺
A Binary Ionic Compounds consists of one cation and one anion.
To form these compounds, the charges must cancel out.
Ex: Potassium & Fluorine
K⁺¹ F⁻¹
These elements will form a compound called KF. This is because their charges cancel out to equal 0.
We did not finish the notes in class. This is where we ended :)

Finish the four WebAssigns by tomorrow night before 11:59 p.m.!
